Middle School Enrichment Camp

The spring 2018 Futures AHEAD Enrichment Camp was held on April 4 at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA. Through partnerships with Longwood Gardens and Rockwell Custom, students spent a full day at the gardens exploring the concept of bio-mimicry through unique, hands-on learning activities. Each student team was led by professional educators from Longwood. Returning expert chaperones from Rockwell once again joined Futures AHEAD, after hosting the Fall 2017 Enrichment Camp in November.

Previously, the students spent the day on an active construction site where they participated in six workshops to outline the steps of the custom home building process. Attendees also explored careers in construction, skilled trades, marketing and sales and worked in teams to draft blueprints for a potential home-buyer's dream house.

Building on the knowledge gained and using their blueprints from the fall camp with Rockwell, student teams applied the idea of bio-mimicry to solve problems with their original home design. Participants took part in an interactive tour of Longwood Gardens, discovered a variety of careers in horticulture, and ultimately, were inspired to create their own natural engineering inventions.
